Mallalieu Tree (2022) for six percussionists and piano ~15:30
Written for Parker Konkel’s graduation recital
This piece is inspired by the Mallalieu series, a self-referential musical structure first explored by Robert Morris in his work Not Lilacs. I was drawn to the way
the series can generate material that continually grows out of itself.
Using this idea, I imagined the piece as a musical tree, where each gesture leads to new offshoots and directions. At times, many lines unfold at once, creating
dense, interwoven textures. At other moments, the music thins out into brief points of stability, with only one or two lines remaining. The work also includes
large, echoing chordal passages that expand the sense of space.
Each cymbal hit marks the start of a new musical branch, signaling a moment where the music splits and grows in a new direction. Chaotic and deeply inter-
connected, I find it to be a beautiful exploration of emergence.
