Sometimes, when working with musical systems, they begin to shape the piece on their own. My usual process involves revising and questioning the

material, adjusting it through ongoing listening and response.

With Multiple Chains, that process was unusually short. Once the initial rules were set, the piece emerged almost immediately. The resulting structure felt

complete and convincing, so very little of the original material was altered. Rather than feeling constructed, the music felt discovered.
